Susan Boyle

Unless you have lived in a cupboard for the last week you must by now know of the phenomena that is Susan Boyle. Although having said that neither my best friend nor my eldest daughter had heard of her until I told them about her.

The show Britain's Got Talent is not exactly my cup of tea, indeed I look down my nose at such low grade entertainment, since fundamentally I am an intellectual snob. However by Monday last I had heard of her and by Tuesday courtesy of BT Vision I had seen the show.

Acres of print have been written by now about this fairy story and I have no real intention of adding much to it or saying anything original.

The obvious one in that this story highlights the shallow nature of our current materialistic society where we judge people on looks and possessions and age. Such tragically is the outcome of  the greed that is fostered by unfettered capitalism and the utter selfishness of society in general. One that seeks to fill that dark void in the human soul with the tinsel and glitter of material secularism.

So watch what happens, sadly we won't change, we as a society will endeavour to change this woman to fit the image we require of her in order to maintain the fiction that makes up our lives.

Yet we have been here before, if we hadn't would the Bible need to be full of stories about seeing the hearts of people and not judging by outward appearances?

We are all guilty of this in some measure at least.

No?

Think carefully.

I know I am guilty of judging folk by accent, looks, clothes and I confess I really ought to know better.

Mea Culpa.

I think she has showed a lot of people something - although she didn't expect it to be so huge. I don't think she'll let herself be changed too much. She seems pretty down to earth and has some wisdom to draw on. But also - if she can afford a new hairdo and some clothes and wants to then more power to her.

I just heard of her this evening, Mr B told me about her and sent me a link to one of her performances on you tube. She sang one of my favourite songs, and sang it beautifully... I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps :o)

That's all that I know of her though.

We are all guilty of this Stuart. The police judge people by their colour of skin, we judge people by the clothes they wear (hoodies anyone?) by their age (can't possibly have a brain or do a job of work after 50 or 60 years of age) I loved the looks on not only the judges faces but also the audience as well. They were expecting it to be a shambles. Yes you are right, the first thing they will do is get her to lose weight, do her hair, her clothes etc, there is unfortunately a stereotype of women singers and performers(yes Stuart it is far worse for women these days) that dictates that you must look a certain way, be no more than a dress size 10, have gorgeous long locks of hair, its stereotyping at its worst.
I loved her, she is natural and probably doesn't give two hoots about her appearance because she is a spinster and has never had a fella. I wish her lots of luck and just wish this was a wake up call to everyone to heed that old saying 'don't judge a book by its cover' and to stop being so judgemental on outward appearance.

One important lesson that old age has taught me is to look beyond the `image'; dig a little deeper.
Having said that, must catch up on Susan Boyle!

I have a real bee in my bonnet about this - why the surprise that someone who is not particularly attractive (well not to me) can possess a beautiful voice?

Would there be sooooo much coverage if she looked more like a pop star? She's even been our the news Down Under for goodness sake!!

I think Susan is a very timely reminder about judging people.

I think we all do a bit of judging on first impressions. It gives us something to act on instead of floundering about blindly.

She has a lovely voice, and is natural, which is part of her appeal, but I must admit I was most suprised she could sing so well........so yes, I am guilty of judging the surface I can see, instead of the inside I can't.

Hope the Mac is still wowing you. Rache

As one intellectual snob to another I agree with your words here and assign them to the sky writers. Not judging by the cover seems to be a total impossiblity for most people. Nor can anyone seem to believe that anyone else is as complicated as they are. Looking past the covers is also endemically important for works of art and ideas. It's a topic I hammer away on often even though I may disturb my neighbors doing it. It's all a matter of people avoiding that dangerous deamon called "original thought."

I think everyone has pretty much covered everything. I am just happy for her that she's finally got a shot at something she's obviously wanted to do for a looong time.
